How to set up your Amazon Echo: An easy-to-follow guide

So you’ve just purchased an Amazon Echo and you’re anxious to get it set up and working. Thankfully, setting up your Amazon Echo is easy to do. Follow these steps on how to set up Amazon Echo and you’ll be up and running in no time.

How to set up your Amazon Echo:

Time needed: 2 minutes.

Applies to Amazon Dot (3rd generation), Echo (3rd generation), Echo Plus (2nd generation) and Echo Studio.

  1. Download the Alexa app.

  2. Plug in your Echo device and wait until the ring light turns orange

  3. Open the Alexa app

  4. Click on the menu icon

  5. Click “Add Device”

  6. Click “Amazon Echo”, and then select the Echo device you want to set up (ie. Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus etc.)

    You also may need to select the generation of the Echo device you want to set up. You’ll be shown images of each generation Echo device. Simply select the generation of the device you’re setting up.

  7. Select “Yes” when asked, “Is your Echo plugged in and displaying an orange light?”

    At this stage, the Alexa app will start searching for your Echo device. Select your device when it appears.

  8. Select your WiFi network

    If this is the first Echo device you’re setting up, you’ll need to enter in your WiFi password. If you’ve registered other Echo devices to your account and have them connected to your WiFi network, you will not need to enter your WiFi password.

  9. You’re all set! Now you can using your Amazon Echo device.

Note: If you already have an Alexa device in your home, Amazon offers “Frustration-Free Setup”, which links any additional Echo device purchased from their site to your existing Amazon account. This simplifies the setup process and automatically adds new Echo devices to your WiFi network. All you need to do is plug in your new Echo device and let Frustration-Free Setup do all the work!

To take advantage of Frustration-Free setup, check the “Link my Amazon account to simplify setup” box in the buy box of the Echo device product page (see image below).
